Craig Newmark, the found of Craigslist and Craigconnects, has found a unique way to celebrate his 59th Birthday.

Newmark is asking Twitter users to share what they would consider to be the perfect Christmas gift.  For everyone who takes part and uses the #perfectgift hashtag, $1.00 will be donated to the American Red Cross.  Newmark will donate up to $10,000 which will be used to purchase military comfort kits.

The military comfort kits cost $50 and provide essential items for wounded army personnel such as phone cards, toiletries and other items like MP3 music cards.

Newmark said:

“For my birthday I hope folks will help me give the gift of hope by telling me what they think the perfect gift is, for themselves or to give someone else.”

“When they do it on Twitter and use the hashtag #perfectgift, I’ll donate $1 per tweet to the American Red Cross for military comfort kits.”

The campaign will run throughout December and Newmark will be promoting the campaign on his own Twitter account and through Facebook.  The campaign will also be promoted through Newmark’s blog at www.craigconnects.org.

It is hoped the campaign will also raise awareness of the other items available from the American Red Cross gift catalogue such as phone cards and blankets. The most popular gifts for 2011 are the military comfort kits, a full day of emergency shelter and vaccinations.

Newmark said:

“The more people participate the more we can help our veterans.”
